You know what annoys me?

Sat Nov 10, 2007, 9:25 PM
Everyone's seen these "Character is..." things, right?

Well, they're driving me nuts. One was maybe a little funny. A LITTLE. But they're all the same.
X is (Insert what X is in series)
X is not a businessman
X is not a surfer
X does not work at an ice cream shop

X is a well-balanced normal person
X is not a mystery
X is not angsty
X is not in highschool

X is in love with (insert whoever author thinks X is in love with)
Not his best female friend
Not his best male friend
Not his mentor

The end.

OKAY. I THINK I KNOW THAT X IS NOT A SURFER. OBVIOUSLY I KNOW THIS. IF X WAS REALLY A SURFER, WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO WRITE FANFICTION IN WHICH X IS A SURFER.

Yes, some of fandom is ridiculous, and I can see why you might want to poke fun at it. It's just, these things are repetitive fandom-bashings, and they get old fast. Also. Just because you're WRITING it doesn't mean you're RIGHT.

Most fanfic authors and fanartists know perfectly well that the situation they are drawing is not canonically possible. That obviously does not stop us. If it happened in the manga or book or show already, we wouldn't need to draw or write about it, because it is right there for us to look at. I, for example, ship EdEnvy, and I know PERFECTLY WELL THAT THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP LIKE THAT IN CANON. This is OBVIOUS. I KNOW they hate each other, I KNOW Envy wants to kill Hoho and Ed, and I KNOW Ed is most likely not gay. I just like the dynamic, and it's fun to try to figure out how to make it plausible. Then there's the other extreme, one that for some reason nobody ever seems to notice - Sometimes, just sometimes, THE FANGIRLS ARE RIGHT.

I'm serious. We are not all self-deluding crazies. Sometimes, we ship a pairing because we think, oh, I don't know, that it has an ACTUAL CANONICAL BASIS. My example is this - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, KuroFai. My OTP. I have seen a Character Is where the person said Fai wasn't in love with Kurogane.

Now, come on, people. If you've read even the first few volumes of the manga, you can see that something is there. Yes, I can tell the difference between a pairing I just want and a pairing I can see is there. CLAMP actually shot down the straight!Fai fangirl's most solid argument - The existance of Chii.

Well, guess what? Chii is actually Mommy Dearest, and if you ask me, Fai is about as straight as a corkscrew. KuroTomo, you say? TOMOYO IS A LESBIAN. I'M NOT JOKING. READ CCS.

They care about each other in a way that goes just a little beyond 'just friends'. I don't know about you guys, but I would have some trouble cutting off my own arm, that is cutting off my arm which I need to use because as a ninja I need it to fight with and strength is what I consider the most important, for a friend. A friend who keeps telling me to go on without him and let him die. While I am bleeding from a huge hole in my side and the kids are in serious trouble.

So... yes, some ships aren't real, and I guess that's why people are making the 'character is' things. The problem is, they aren't going to stop people, they aren't going to do much more than restate the obvious, and sometimes they're wrong.

PS, if you want to fight me on this Tsubasa thing, I am ready, bitch. Ready... and ...waiting.
